Capitol Day

  • Oklahoma State Capitol 2300 North Lincoln Boulevard Oklahoma City, OK, 73105 United States (map)

For the month of April we're partnering up with Oklahomans for the Arts for their annual Oklahoma Arts Day 2017! It will be like our usual Capitol Day events...but with an extra touch of cultured flair.

The arts and culture industry develops communities, improves education, and grows the economy. This year's event will focus on advocacy training and spending time with your legislators - which is smack dab in the middle of the ol' Let's Fix This wheelhouse.

Music, painting, dance, poetry - these are the things that make life worth living. Art is the seasoning to an otherwise bland existance. We need art; it is vital to the fabric of our society. No civilization in the history of the world was able to grow or mature or prosper or survivie without art.

Not sure art impacts your life? Television, radio, movies, religious worship, photorgraphy, the picture your daughter drew that is hanging on your refridgerator right now, the design on your favorite tie, the way the landscaping looks around the house down the block that you envy every time you drive by - these are all regular, everyday manifestations of people who were exposed to art. And there's a really good chance that whatever art they saw or heart, whatever it was that resonated with them, that it was funded by the original crowdfunding - tax dollars.
9:00-10:15am Advocacy Training. There will be groups for both newbies and experienced advocates. (We're hosting the Newbies group in the Blue Room on the 2nd floor.)

10:30-11:30am: Kickoff event (2nd floor rotunda)

11:30-1:30 Visit your Legislators' offices and invite them to have lunch with us! (Lunch will also be in the 2nd Floor rotunda)

6:00-9:00pm Capitol Crawl (Apr 12th) begins! (Check out that event's page for more details.)
*There will be live music & art throughout the day!*

This is a day for regular folks who care about our state and our communities to take some time off of work and actually meet face-to-face with our state legislators about the state budget crisis. We've all been complaining about stuff on social media long enough; now let's have the conversations in person. The state may be broke, but we're not broken - there are a lot of totally reasonable, common-sense solutions for increasing revenue available. We just need to encourage our lawmakers toward them.

As a reminder, this isn't a's more of a group outing. If you've never been to the Capitol before, that's fine.

Remember: Decisions are made by people who show up. I hope you'll be one of them.

You can expect a bunch of regular folks just like you, most of whom have never done this kind of thing, but who care deeply for the future of this great state. You can expect a lot of smiles and name tags and bright red "Let's Fix This" buttons, because we're all in this together and we want our legislators to know who we are. You can expect to meet some new people and have some conversations. It'll be relaxed and fun and probably really interesting.

And at the end of the day, you can expect to feel ridiculously awesome because you did something that the other 4 million people in this state didn't have the courage to do - you showed up. As an added bonus, you'll probably also make some new friends.

1. First of all: don't be nervous. Everyone is always nervous about talking to their representatives, but remember: they work for YOU. In fact, if you want to be technical, you own the building!

2. Find out who your representatives are. You can do so online by entering your address here:

3. Find your words. Decide which issues are most important to you., describe your connection to the issue, and what solutions to the problem you support. Here's a form to help you:

Park in the South Lot (the big lot in the middle of Licoln Blvd where the tall oil derrick is) or in the East Lot (due east of the Capitol, next to the Governor's mansion). If you park in the East Lot, the tunnel under Lincoln is OPEN, so you don't have to dodge traffic.

Enter the building through the south or east entrance, proceed through security, and then go up to the 2nd Floor to the Blue Room, which is located in the NE corner of the building.

Feel to DM me.
You are welcome to come for part of the day or the whole thing. Later in the evening, we will be hosting a Capitol Crawl (Apr 12th) in theUptown23rd distric (NW 23rd Street, just west of the Capitol) where you can hang out and interact with legislators and other Let's Fix Thissupporters in a more relaxed environment. Check out that event page for details!
